چکیده

OBJECTIVE To measure and compare tibial torsion values as assessed by goniometry and three-dimensional kinematics. In addition, the impact of each one of these measurements on kinematic and kinetic results for normal gait was determined. METHODS Twenty-three healthy and fully ambulatory patients were assessed, 11 women and 12 men, from 20 to 40 years old. Data were collected at a laboratory for the three-dimensional analysis of movement with 10 cameras and two force plates. Tibial torsion measurements were obtained using goniometry and three-dimensional kinematics based on the Plug-in Gait model. Afterwards, both procedures were compared, and the impact of each result was assessed on the kinematic and kinetic modeling of the knee and ankle. RESULTS Pearson's linear correlation coefficient (r=0,504) showed a moderate correlation between the three-dimensional kinematics and goniometry, and between the changes in the measurements. Regarding the processed kinematic and kinetic results for every torsion position, no significant differences were noticed among any of the studied variables (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Although statistical correlation among tibial torsion angles by goniometry and three-dimensional kinematic were moderate, kinematic and kinetic analysis of the joints did not reveal any significant changes. Can biomechanical variables predict improvement in crouch gait?

Many patients respond positively to treatments for crouch gait, yet surgical outcomes are inconsistent and unpredictable. In this study, we developed a multivariable regression model to determine if biomechanical variables and other subject characteristics measured during a physical exam and gait analysis can predict which subjects with crouch gait will demonstrate improved knee kinematics on a...

The effect of excessive tibial torsion on the capacity of muscles to extend the hip and knee during single-limb stance.

Excessive tibial torsion, a rotational deformity about the long axis of the tibia, is common in patients with cerebral palsy who walk with a crouch gait. Previous research suggests that this deformity may contribute to crouch gait by reducing the capacity of soleus to extend the knee; however, the effects of excess external torsion on the capacity of other muscles to extend the stance limb duri...

The Availability of Radiological Measurement of Tibial Torsion: Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography Reconstruction

OBJECTIVE To assess the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability for measuring tibial torsion measurements by a radiographic method using three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction (3D-CT) and to compare the physical measures to those of 3D-CT. METHOD The study included 33 children who presented with intoeing gait. Tibial torsion was measured by 3D-CT. Distal reference point was the ...

Effects of lower limb torsion on ankle kinematic data during gait analysis.

VICON Clinical Manager software is widely used for gait analysis and has four methods for computing ankle plantarflexion-dorsiflexion motion and transverse plane ankle rotation profiles. The authors evaluated 14 subjects with a diagnosis of spastic cerebral palsy and tibial torsion ranging from 39 degrees internal torsion to 90 degrees external torsion, using the four different processing metho...
